Monster Hunter Outlanders Beginner Guide

Monster Hunter Outlanders will be going live tomorrow. It is an open-world game with a lot of content and seasons coming; therefore, don’t approach this game with an “I want the best stuff in a week” mentality. A more realistic approach at the start of Monster Hunter Outlanders is that you need to understand what is important during the first week and how you should progress through the early game so you don’t end up wasting useful resources.
This Monster Hunter Outlanders Beginner’s guide covers what to do first, what to save, and what to skip, so you unlock more of the game without wasting resources.
Note: This guide is based on the third closed beta (CBT3) and the official launch preview. Some details may change when the game goes live, and we will update this page when they do.
Quick Tips for Your First Week
Before we talk about detailed progression path there are some tips that might come in handy as you start the game:
- Make sure to prioritise the main story first
- Most of the reward mail and codes come with an expiry date, so make sure you claim them first
- Do not spend your pulls right away.
- Treat your Fated Adventurer as your main character.
- Only upgrade when the content starts feeling tough; this gives you more flexibility to drift in any direction at any point without considering that you have wasted resources.
- Use your daily activities and spend your energy before you log off.
Focus on the Main Story First
Your main goal for the first week should just be the main story progression. There are several mechanics in Monster Hunter Outlanders such as crafting, tools, a skill tree, and more. All of these are locked behind progression through the main story. So don’t waste time chasing random monsters; instead, continue the main storyline first. Once you hit a progression wall, that is the time you should divert your attention to side content.
Redeem Codes
Monster Hunter Outlanders has one active code right now, shared during the official launch preview. Enter it after the game launches on October 29.
| Code | Rewards |
|---|---|
| MHO1029 | 200 Ruta Coins, 20,000 Zenny |
Events
Once the game is live, make sure you go to the event tabs and check all the live events and start progressing towards them so that you do not miss any free rewards. I will update this section completely after the launch.

Save Your Early Rewards
The biggest mistake a lot of players make is that they start spending any rewards they get at the start of the game. This is probably the biggest mistake, as you won’t know what’s worth investing in unless you reach a higher level or get closer to the endgame. There is a possibility what might seem OP in start might not feel the same in the end game.
Keep your Ruta Coins, Contracts, and rare upgrade materials until you know what you need. The recruitment banners unlock around 30 to 40 minutes into the game, during the “Where Adventurers Gather” mission. Once they do, take your time before you pull. You do not need a gacha adventurer to clear early content, so there is no rush.
A few things to know before you spend:
- Standard Contracts cannot be used on the Featured banner.
- The Featured banner uses Featured Contracts or 160 Ruta Coins per pull. Midori is expected to be the first featured SSR.
- The Beginner banner guarantees an SSR within 50 pulls and has a 20% discount, so 10 pulls cost 8 Standard Contracts. That means you can reach the guarantee in 40 pulls.
- The Featured pity guarantees carry over between Featured banners, so there is no reason to spend on a banner you do not want.
For a full breakdown of rates and pity, see our MHO gacha guide.
Trust Your Fated Adventurer Is Strong
The Fated Adventurer is the main character that you customise at the start of the game. It is one of the strongest characters in the game and can use every weapon type. In CBT3, he was probably the highest DPS adventurer in the game.
So this means that you don’t need to feel pressured to pull other characters from the banners, and you can hold onto your resources. Put your resources into your Fated Adventurer first. Use gacha characters later, when you know what your team needs.
Free Adventurers You Can Get
You can get several adventurers in Monster Hunter Outlanders without pulling. Based on CBT3, these are the ones to look for:
| Adventurer | Rarity | How to Get |
|---|---|---|
![]() Luka | SSR | In-game event (Surging Lightning in CBT3) |
![]() Pyro | SSR | Spend 450 Chronicle Coins in the Brave Adventure Chronicles shop |
![]() Raya | SR | Pre-registration reward, sent by in-game mail |
![]() Madelyn | SR | Complete the Toxic Mist Swamp quest |
![]() Ouyang Varen | SR | Complete the Adventurers Assemble quest |
Try Different Weapons
Your Fated Adventurer can use any weapon, so test a few before you commit. The launch version has eight weapon types:
- Great Sword
- Long Sword
- Dual Blades
- Hammer
- Lance
- Heavy Bowgun
- Bow
- Charge Blade (new at launch)
Pick the weapon you like; don’t just blindly pick up a weapon and invest in it.
Explore and Farm When It Helps
You do not need to clear the whole map in your first week. Explore as the story takes you, pick up materials, and unlock travel points. Some exploration gets easier after you unlock more movement tools, so you can come back later.
Save Your Materials
Do not farm a full armor set from every monster you meet. You will replace most of your early gear soon, as you unlock stronger monsters and better crafting options. Spending your best materials now means you may not have them when you need them later.
Use these rules instead:
- If you cannot deal enough damage, upgrade your weapon.
- If you keep getting knocked down, upgrade your armor.
- If monsters are easy, save your materials.
What Is Coming After Monster Hunter Outlanders Launch
The first season is Twin Suns and Land of Radiance. Seasons last about two months and bring new Apex Challenges, themed events, and exclusive appearances. The first event, When Steel Wind Descends, runs from November 13 to November 26 (UTC). You will want your resources ready for that, so another reason not to spend everything on day one.
If you are thinking about rerolling, we do not recommend it. Reaching the banners takes a lot of time, and most early pulls are Standard Contracts. See our reroll guide for the full reasoning. You can also check the free characters guide and the banner schedule for more details.
