How to Escape a Wanted Level in GTA 6?

Escaping a wanted level in GTA 6 is not as easy as it used to be in GTA 5 where breaking the line of sight would stop the chase. The wanted level system in GTA 6 is quite detailed. You need a proper understanding of every layer of the system to make sure you can drop these wanted levels. Here is exactly how to handle each part and escape a wanted level in GTA 6.
How to Lose the Police in GTA 6
Losing the police in GTA 6 comes down to three things:
- Breaking line of sight
- Escaping the seach area
- Clearing heat indicators like spotted as a couple
All of these systems work together so fixing one of them won’t stop the police from chasing you (in most cases).

Step 1: Understand What the Police Know About You
Before trying to fix anything else, check the heat indicators. These are the red icons below the wanted stars. Each of them represent a piece of information that the cops have on you. The more heat indicators you have active, the harder it is to escape. Here is what each heat indicator means in GTA 6 and how to fix it:
How to Drop Heat Indicators in GTA 6
Honestly, heat indicators are pretty simple to clear and I recommend that you do these first. Entering the search-area phase with multiple active heat indicators makes losing the cops much harder because they have more to look for.
Step 2: Break Line of Sight
The most important step in escaping the police is changing your wanted level. This holds the highest priority, as it makes all the other steps relatively easier. So if you cannot clear the heat indicators right now, the best thing you can do is break the line of sight and make sure the white stars turn into red. The red stars wanted level means that the police have lost you; however, you are still in the search area.
Once you are in this state, you will find clearing the heat indicators, such as changing outfits, vehicles, and weapons, relatively easier. Now the next step is to leave the search area.
Also, if your stars are in the hollow white state, police have been dispatched to your location; however, they haven’t identified you yet. So, in this case, you can easily escape the area without the chase.
How to Handle Every Wanted Stars State
Step 3: Get Out of the Search Area
Once your stars go red, two concentric circles appear on the map. The inner circle is dark red and the outer circle is a lighter red. Both are active search zones where police are patrolling and looking for you based on whatever heat indicators they have.
Escaping the inner circle reduces the pressure but does not end the wanted level. You will need to escape the outer circle; however, once you have cleared the heat indicators, you will find it relatively easier to go through the inner and outer circles.
The problem is that the size of the scale and the intensity of the chase by the police scale with the star count. At lower wanted levels 1-2 stars it’s really easy to escape however, escaping at a 4-star wanted level might take some time.
Even after you escape the search area, you need to clear the remaining heat indicators. This is what makes GTA 6’s wanted system different from what you are used to in GTA 5. You cannot simply outrun the situation and make it reset.
Escaping at 6-Star Wanted Level in GTA 6
At one star, the police don’t carry any lethal force. However at higher stars the chase is intense. We didn’t have a chance to see a 6-star chase yet in extended look on Netflix as the max wanted level shown in the clip was a four star chase. Even then the chase had various police vehicles and a helicopter chasing you.
So I am sure that the 6-star wanted level will be extremely hard. According to various sources, at six stars, the entire map will become the search zone, which makes the heat indicator system the only real way to escape the police at 6-stars in GTA 6.
